Our Story
The year was 1988 and Don Kott Ford was selling upwards of 700 cars a month…
I had the bright idea of working every position in the dealership for free.
Now, who in their right mind would work in every position behind and among the showroom floor?
Well, if you can think back to the stone-age 80′s you may recall there wasn’t much technology behind the scenes at the dealership. I mean, besides the tape deck that blasted classic rock after hours there weren’t many buttons to press to get things done.
You may also remember the process of backing up the customer data was a little tedious… Actually, a “flat-out pain in the ass” may be a more accurate description. Every month, the data from the dealership was put on file (by the way, this is when file actually meant a physical khaki-colored file you could hold in your hands) and if things got really fancy, we stored data on floppy disks and tapes.
Every month these files were stored among the catacombs of towering document stacks in cold dusty warehouses. These young guys have only to type in a name and that data comes up, but in those days when you needed data you had to mosey on over to the warehouse and dig up the data yourself. One could imagine this slowed things down a bit.
In 1988 we sought to create a better way. Fresh out of college, armed with a computer science degree I walked into the Don Kott showroom determined to create a database system so the dealer could call on all his data at anytime.
